The Monastery of St George

The Monastery of St George is located 16 km east of Sofia, at a detour on the Sofia-Varna highway, near the village of Gorni Bogrov.

The early history of the place is a foggy one. The local people erected the tiny church after
the liberation from Ottoman rule in the second half of the 19th century.

The high point of interest of this small monastery is the two-metre tall votive stone built into the
church altar and credited to miraculously “grow”. Local legend has it that it was the Crusaders who brought the stone over from Jerusalem, citing the Jerusalem crosses carved into the stone as
proof.
