Kladnitsa Monastery of St Nicholas

Kladnitsa Monastery of St Nicholas is located 30 km from Sofia and 1 km away, via an asphalt road, high above the village of Kladnitsa, in a pine forest, on the western slopes of Vitosha Mountain.

High above the present-day monastery there are remains of a medieval fortress, which myths link to the early history of the monastery.

The present-day church was erected in the period 1841–1845 on the initiative of a local resident, Spas Burnov from the village of Marchaevo, who a decade earlier had a dream that he was to revive the monastery. The iconostasis from the 19th century with icons painted by the Samokov icon painter Nikola Obrazopisov and others is in a state of good preservation. The frescos were made in a vivid na?ve style by Kostadin Gerov (Antikarya) from the town of Samokov in 1883.
