Lozen Monastery of Sts Peter and Paul

Lozen Monastery of Sts Peter and Paul

The village of Lozen in Sofia’s environs is surrounded by so many and so well-maintained chapels that they’ve been dubbed Lozen Holy Mount.

In the 1990s, one chapel – temple grew into a monastery before our very eyes. A legend has it that way back in olden times a house of worship stood on this site, an assumption duly verified by few remnants of columns and old ashlars.

Also in the 1990’s, a small nunnery was established here and it gradually began to grow.

2008 saw the inauguration of the new church built in an updated Byzantine style.

The monastery is located near Trakia highway, right after the exit to the village of Ravno pole and owing to its accessibility has been attracting numerous visitors, especially so on major church feast days when magnificent flower arrangements are traditionally made. In recent years the nuns have developed handmade manufacture of artistically decorated candles and wax eggs.
