Bistritsa Monastery of St Petka

Bistritsa Monastery of St Petka is located on the eastern slopes of Vitosha Mountain, near the village of Bistritsa and is easily accessible on foot or by car.

Here again the history of the place abounds in myths and treasure-hunting legends. A small church, built of river boulders and mud, stood up in the 19th century. In 1951 it was pulled down and in 1952 it was replaced with a new church of St Elijah the Prophet (consecrated in 1956).

The church was erected and decorated thanks to funds raised by Bistritsa villagers and under the guidance of father Dragomir. The Reverend himself painted the icons for the iconostasis, made the donors’ portraits, the woodcarvings, etc.

In 2008, the church was frescoed once again.
