Lozen Monastery of St Saviour

Lozen Monastery of St Saviour is located high in the woodlands of the Lozen Mountain and can be accessed by car, though with some difficulty.

The main church is dedicated to the Ascension of Christ.

The earliest known facts about the history of the monastery go back to the 17th century when it was a significant centre of education and enlightenment.

Following a period of decline, the monastery was revived in the 19th century. The church was built in 1821 and painted in 1847. Over 1868–1869, it was reconstructed and fitted with three new domes. Nikola Obrazopisov, a patriotically-minded artist from Samokov, who took meticulous care to include Bulgarian saints, painted the murals.
